10 Things That Made Me Smile This Week

Sep 18, 2018

Last month I wrote a post sharing 20 things that made me smile in that particular week. The reception of this post was overwhelmingly positive including a request to make it a regular occurrence. While I cannot promise it will be regular, I must admit, it is a beneficial exercise in reflecting on all the goodness that surrounds us. So today I’d like to share 10 things that made me smile quite sincerely and with deep gratitude upon finding myself in each moment as this particular week finds us in mid-September nearing summer’s farewell and fall’s arrival.

  1. I have finally begun to watch the first season of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel on Amazon and am asking myself why it has taken me so long to begin. She (Rachel Brosnahan aka Mrs. Maisel) and the show are superb. Have a look at the trailer below for the first season. The second season will be premiering sometime this fall.

2. chipmunks joining the backyard food party at my home (in other words, enjoy the bird food sprinkled upon the ground)

3. picking up my first pumpkin of the season at Trader Joe’s for only $3.99

4. perusing Floret’s Flowers for daffodil bulbs to be purchased at the end of the month. Next year I am vowing there will be more color in spring in my front yard.

5. viewing this lovely documentary about French painter Édouard Manet at a local boutique theater. Read The New York Times’ review from 2013 here.

6. discovering that I may have found something delicious and more health conscious than my weekly croissant – the Morning Glory muffin (seen below at Foxtail Bakeshop).

7. listening to Diana Krall and Tony Bennett’s new album

8, finding a new-to-me podcast about books and tea!

9. meditating along the river amongst the autumn grasses, Oscar at my side and Norman roaming about (first image above)

10. picking up new books at the library, thankful for such a well-stocked local resource that keeps my nose in the books and saves my budget (currently reading this book).

Wishing you a beautiful Wednesday and a most wonderful final few days of the summer season.

  1. Dear SHannon, I too love this segment, it’s so positive and happy, it encourages me to reflect on the small but oh so important moments every day. I would also like to thank you for your cooking video, I don’t know how you fit it all in. I also watch a video that I think you would enjoy called The joy of baking, they have just reached a millon
Subscribers, the lady is Canadian and her husband does the editing they make a superb team and her recipes are both simple and fool proof, if you haven’t already seen it then I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.
    Warm regards Carol, Australia.

  2. Florets Flowers is a lovely resource. Thank you so much for sharing. I’m going to have to find a spot in my yard for the acropolis daffodils….they are too beautiful to pass up and will be quite the simple luxury to enjoy when spring makes her debut. Thank you again for sharing.

  3. Love this. Thank you! It makes you stop and think about all the wonderful things that happened in any given day or week that pass you by and you never think twice about. That old saying stop and smell the roses is just so true- thank you for reminding me. Think I will write my own list this week.

  4. Yes, Mrs. Maisel is fabulous! I couldn’t agree more. Soooo happy they are producing another season. It’s a positive version of “The Wife.” Thank you for sharing Tea & Tattle. I can’t wait to listen to this podcast.

  5. I also love listening to Tony Bennett & Diana Krall, Love is Here to Stay. I think you must have recommended it in a post. If so, thank you!

  6. Hey Shannon. This segment brings me so much joy. Thank you for sharing, I absolutely love it. Especially number 9. I listened to the Bennett and Krall album the other day and thought, “oh, Shannon would love this”. And currently listening to the podcast, it looks lovely.

    Thank you!

  7. My sister and I were talking this morning, and she said she was having a bad day. Your post inspired me, and I suggested a challenge: we would each find 5 things that make us happy or inspires us today and share them with each other. I don’t know how it will go, but I suspect it will improve the mood overall. Thank you.

  8. Thank you for the Tea & Tattle information. I took a look and the most recent episode is with Kate Morton, who is one of my favorite authors! I’ve chosen to listen to the audiobook versions of all her books because the narrator is wonderful and the writing is so lyrical. Joanne Froggatt from Downtown Abbey narrates her newest audiobook out next month and I can’t wait, so this podcast will have to tide me over. 🙂

  9. Hi Shannon, I live in Bend in the summers, and love all your posts! Your hikes remind me of all the joy it brings to my Golden Retriever as well! We do the same hikes you do! The stops at the local restaurants and bakeries remind me that it is the little things in life that bring us joy! Thank you!

    1. Thank you for saying ‘hello!’ Lori! Yes, you know very well the calm and rejuventation Bend can offer upon stepping outside onto one of the many trails. Thank you for stopping by and enjoy the rest of the year before you return again!

  10. Thank you for the Foxtail Bakeshop recommendation. My next trip to Bend will include that stop! Everything looks delicious! Always looking for new things to do in my Bend visits, so any recommendations you can provide will be welcomed!
