French food and more foodie pleasures, fashion at great prices and ways to become more productive . . .

~App

~Rescue Time

Are you trying to get a handle on your use of technology? Are your realizing that you spend too much time on certain sites or social media apps that aren’t productive? RescueTime app is a way to track your time on both your computer and your mobile devices. You can set alerts when a certain amount of time has been logged on a particular site, block certain websites, as well as turn off alerts and monitoring at anytime. The RescueTime Lite is free for life, but you can also upgrade to premium if you find it extremely productive and wish to use an advanced version.

~Simply French: Patricia Wells Presents the Cuisine of Joel Robuchon

If you are a cook or baker who prefers and appreciates the expertise of the French approach to food, or you want to learn, this is a must-have book to have in your kitchen. Originally published nearly two decades ago, Patricia Wells shares all that she has learned from the well-respected French chef Joel Robuchon. With a beautiful introduction that is a must-read (don’t skip), readers discover the art of good cooking. It’s not that it’s difficult, but it is understanding the basics, refraining from shortcuts and using quality ingredients, that must all come together in order to create the food that pleasures our palate. I’ve been eager to have this book in my kitchen for awhile now, and it was well worth the wait (the chocolate tart to the right in my Instagram feed is the first of many recipes I am eager to try).

~Film

~Big Night

~For those who know this film, you also know that it is nearly 20 years old; however, I have a feeling many people don’t know about it, so I wanted to share. If you are a foodie, you are going LOVE this film. Starring Stanley Tucci, who also wrote the script, Tony Shalhoub, Minnie Driver and Isabella Rossellini, along with a handful of other names you will recognize, this is a fantastic film centered around Italian cooking. Get into the kitchen, enjoy the “Big Night” as the two brothers (Tucci & Shalhoub) present all of the courses, and then make sure your kitchen is stocked so you can begin cooking as soon as it ends.

~Shopping

~Furla Paper Moon Saffiano Onyx Zip Satchel Bag

I am a big believer that the quality of our handbag, much like our choice of shoes, can elevate or deflate any outfit, so over the past few years I have gradually improved my handbag collection (3 must-have: clutch, tote, day handbag). And one of the investment pieces I purchased last year was Furla’s black satchel bag. The good news today is that it is on sale – reduced 30%, and I can attest – for the medium size, there is ample room inside, but nothing cumbersome. If you’re search for a black handbag, you don’t want to pass this up.

~Roland Mouret & Banana Republic

French luxury fashion designer Roland Mouret teams up with Banana Republic for a limited collection which debuted yesterday (August 7th). With feminine silhouettes and classic color combinations with a touch of contemporary flourishes, this is a collection to shop for your capsule wardrobe that won’t break the bank. Below are a few of my favorites:

~Television

~Google Chromecast

With flat screen televisions seeming evermore ubiquitous, the one type of television that not everyone has is a Smart TV. But the good news is, there is no need to upgrade if you don’t have one. So long as you have a television with an HDMI port (nearly all flat screen do), you can buy Google Chromecast for under $40 (one time, not monthly), plug it in and be able to view your Netflix, Hulu, Youtube, HBO directly from your tablet or smart phone. I recently helped my parents set their’s up and it couldn’t be easier. Literally, your iPad or tablet becomes your remote control, so even guests (so long as they download the free app), can watch what is on their iPads. Save yourself money, but still watch what you want without the commercials or additional cost.

I don’t know about you, but I would love to sit in one these iconic stripes chairs along an English or French coast, close my eyes and listen to the soft waves lapping against the shore. Add a wonderful book, and I’d be set.

This week on the blog, while with regular postings, has offered a post that readers began sharing with great frequency. Do have a look and share if you’d like as well. Also, a long awaited arrival appeared on my doorstep last week, having first shared it on Instagram, more detailed information will be shared on the blog soon.

Needless to say, summer is lovely and busy just as much as I’d like, I hope it is the same for you. Below are a few links I think you might enjoy.

  1. Big Night is a favorite and often quoted movie in my Italian family. My sisters and I have made the timpani they serve on the “big night”. It’s always a crowd pleaser 🙂
