The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s Interior Designer Shares His Talent for Designing Beautiful Spaces That Feel Like Home

Dec 12, 2019

Interior designer Ben Pentreath, whose most famous clients are arguably the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, decorated an Arts & Craft home in North London that offers an abundance of interior inspiration (check out the designer’s home in Dorset here).

From the large neutral jute rug in the living room layered with a smaller, more colorful area rug in the conversational zone to a kitchen that might just make you swoon and be motivated to stray from the go-to neutral white ever-so slightly.

Tour the entire home here in House & Garden UK, and have a look at the TSLL Takeaways that caught my eye below:

  • Courageously choose wallpaper in the colors and prints of nature and be wowed by the results (see the above image)
  • Built-in shelves for books in the living room, but also in the bedroom
  • Upholstered lampshades – an British home classic choice
  • Choose a color for the kitchen cabinets that speaks to the overall personality of the home, but balance with neutrals – white, wood and copper details
  • Simple candleholders and candle pedestals organized in a vignette for mantle decor (see just below)
  • A rail positioned above the stove for all of your cooking pots and pans and utensils
  • Instead of wall-to-wall carpet, choose a wall-to-wall neutral rug with texture and then purchase a smaller rug for the areas in the room.
  • Baskets, empty, as decor pieces (see the kitchen)

What I appreciate most about Ben Pentreath’s approach to decor is while he mixes different time periods, he also has a talent for making the space a home rather than a museum. Such a skill is not easy, but upon examining his projects closely, we can all learn how to include the necessary details that both elevate and provide comfort each of our living spaces.
