Books

~Atomic Habits: An Easy and Proven Way to Build Good Habits & Break Bad Ones by James Clear

Released last month, discover simple ways to find success with the habits that will make a positive difference in your life in Atomic Habits. Read anecdotal stories about Olympic gold medalists, award-winning artists, business leaders, life-saving physicians, and star comedians sharing how they shaped the environement they lived to welcome the habits they wanted to create the life they desired.

~A Drinkable Feast: A Cocktail Companion to 1920s Paris by Philip Greene

Step back to Paris during the Prohibition Era in cocktail historian Philip Greene’s new book. Sharing the history of 50 different cocktails along with their recipes, Greene follows the “notable American ex-pats who made themselves at home in Parisian cafes and bars, from Ernest Hemingway, F. Scott Fitzgerald, and Gertrude Stein to Picasso, Coco Chanel, Cole Porter, and many more.”

~Everything & Everywhere: A Fact-Filled Adventure for Curious Globe-Trotters by Marc Martin

Okay, travel lovers, or anyone who has travel lovers on their holiday shopping list, award-winning author and illustrator Marc Martin’s new book is full of fun and unique discoveries from around the globe. Travel with him to Iceland, Hong Kong, and yes, even New York City, plus many more destinations.

~Wit’s End: What Wit Is, How It Works and Why We Need It by James Geary

I am intrigued beyond to read James Geary’s new book Wit’s End! If you are like me, you have been in a situation from time to time where a playful comeback or an astute, but funny observation would have been perfect for the setting, but it came hours later. In Wit’s End Geary focuses on a different style of wit for each chapter; “he writes the section on verbal repartee as a dramatic dialogue, the neuroscience of wit as a scientific paper, the spirituality of wit as a sermon, and other chapters in jive, rap, and the heroic couplets of Alexander Pope.”

Francophile Find

~Apéritif: Cocktail Hour the French Way by Rebekah Peppler

It’s the holidays, which means soirees, gatherings, meals and more reasons for a fun approach to cocktail hour. Why not welcome Apéro time as inspired by the French? In Rebekah Peppler’s new book she shares easy and approachable recipes for both cocktails and nibbles that “use lighter, low-alcohol spirits, fortified wines, and bitter liqueurs . . . [and] recipes for equally breezy bites, such as Radishes with Poppy Butter, Gougères, Ratatouille Dip, and Buckwheat-Sel Gris Crackers.”

Film

~Maria by Callas

There is something about documentaries of a singlular person’s journey that I gravitate toward, and with forty years having passed since Maria Callas, “the most famous opera singer in the world, passed away, a new film tells her own story in her own words. This movie is made of many exclusive and unseen images, unheard of live recordings and intimate letters. Isabella Rossini lends her voice to the English version while Fanny Ardant lends hers for the French version.” Look for it in independent or small boutique theaters. I was happy to see that it will be running in Bend here soon at Tin Pan Theater.

We can officially say it now, the holidays have begun! And this year, with Thanksgiving coming on its earliest date possible (due to it being the fourth Thursday in November), we have more time to drink in and savor the holiday season, so to speak. Be sure to mark your calendars for Sunday December 2nd, when TSLL’s Holiday Gift Guide will be shared here on the blog.

What are you up to this weekend? Are you stepping outside to shop, or savoring some quiet time to unwind, or perhaps something else entirely? This year’s Black Friday will find me Friday afternoon at a local independent bookshop here in Bend where Roundabout Books is hosting a reading and signing of my new book Living The Simply Luxurious Life beginning at 4pm. If you’re in the area, be sure to stop by and say hello. And then on Shop Small Saturday I will be at a local independent bookshop in my childhood home town – The Bookloft – from 2-4 pm signing books and sipping and sharing my favorite Parisian tea. (Learn more about each of these events here.)

Thank you for stopping by today and wishing a very festive start to the holiday season. Below are a few posts and articles you might enjoy as well as one video. Until Monday, bonne journée!
