Last weekend while wandering through my local bookshop, I came across LiYana Silver’s highly recommended new book Feminine Genius. After taking a moment to flip through the pages, I knew I wanted to introduce this book to TSLL readers. With an abundance of inspiration, biology, and practices to release what all the “people-pleasing, self-loathing and over-achieving” has kept hidden, life coach Silver offers tools to change your “body, soul, sexuality, intuition, and power” for the better as you step toward your full potential.

Mary’s Household Tips and Tricks: Your Guide to Happiness in the Home by Mary Berry

Having been introduced to Mary Berry through the British Bake-Off which has since came stateside, having moved on from the show, she continues to write and share her wisdom. And this time she has written a book about tending to our sanctuary. Just released in early October, discover Mary’s tips for hosting, gardening, styling your wardrobe, cleaning and more. Somewhat like a Martha Stewart from Britian, but not Martha Stewart. Mary Berry is an original and not someone who can be compared. So if you’re curious to know how she does it, perhaps this book will answer some of your questions.

Bringing It Home: Favorite Recipes from a Life of Adventurous Eating by Gail Simmons

A few weeks ago I tuned in to a new episode of The Splendid Table, and Francis Lam was in the kitchen with Top Chef judge and now cookbook author Gail Simmon. Cooking a breakfast sandwich, she walked him through her favorite breakfast ingredients and how to cook the perfect fried egg. Needless to say, my mouth was watering. This past Tuesday, her new cookbook Bringing It Home was released and is already a best-seller on Amazon. Full of accessible recipes offering incredible flavor for family dining and easy entertaining, some of the recipes include Summer Vegetable Salad with Charred Lime Vinaigrette to Banana-Cardamom Upside Down Cake with Salty Caramel.

C’est Bon: Recipes Inspired by La Grand Epicerie de Paris by Trish Deseine

While released last year, I couldn’t help but bring this cookbook to TSLL readers. If you have ever been to Paris and have stayed in a vacation rental (even if you haven’t), I have a feeling you have visited La Grand Epicerie de Paris (next to the Bon Marche) on the left bank. Just to gawk at the grocery and market offerings is a sight worth seeing, but to have the opportunity to cook with them is a treat indeed. The goal of the cookbook is to offer simple recipes that involve high quality ingredients, of the like which you would pick up at La Grand Epicerie.

France is a Feast: The Photographic Journey of Paul and Julia Child by Alex Prud’homme and Katie Pratt

Julia Child’s great nephew has been busy these past few years (remember this book that I recommended earlier this year?) writing and making available more and more insights into Paul and Julia Child’s life. Released this past Tuesday, France is a Feast is a feast for the eyes. Containing compiled photographs taken by Paul Child, the book takes readers into the journey of Julia and Paul as they sojourned through France. As a new article in Bon Appétit points out, the images enclosed reveal Julia like we’ve never seen her before.

A tremendous thank you to TSLL reader Krysta for introducing me to a new movie which was just released this past June, Ali’s Wedding. While I haven’t seen the entire film, after learning about the plot and viewing the trailer, it is now on my watchlist. And perhaps it might go on yours now as well. A weekend to stay home is something I am quite looking forward to these next few days. Maybe a movie, maybe some time in a favorite bakery, definitely a long walk and yes, a nap as well whenever the mood hits me. A couple of books are begging to be finished and a bevy of new issues of magazines as well. Needless to say, this weekend is a leisure weekend, and I cannot wait to dive in.

    Loved the “French Fridge” post. Living in France for almost 7 years, I can relate! French butter…did you know that there is a “shortage” of butter in France right now? Evidently Americans and Chinese are consuming it in record numbers. This, according to the owner of the fromagerie in our small village. As we live two houses down from a patisserie/boulangerie, I’ve come to view baguette as merely a vehicle to transport the incredible demi-sel French butter to my mouth…..”Picard,” the chain store of frozen French food. Simply superior quality, and it got us through the worst part of our home and kitchen remodel. Even though we now have a lovely kitchen, we often stop and stock up when in Blois or Tours. “Something chilling…” Yes, one must always have some good-quality wine, and a sparkling variety or the real stuff “Champagne” on hand, along with a variety of small snacks—nuts, crisps, pate, rilets, for French guests who ring the bell on any given afternoon. If we ever meet in person, remind me to tell you my story of “mini toasts,” and the faux-pas of serving salmon riletes on crackers. The story is far too long to describe here, and the appropriate “bouf-alors,” “bon-bahs” and “pffts” must be included for the full effect. Suffice it to say that I actually pulled out the “This is the way we do it in the United States…” card, which was accepted, and our friend actually had six crackers with salmon rather than her usual one, bite! The French can be very rigid in “…how things are done.” I later found some “mini toasts” at our local Super-U and bought a package. I showed them to our friend, and again, I was wrong….they must be “doux” (soft) and not toasted…..Zut alors! Another French friend, now in her late 90’s and living in a fifth-floor walk up building, always presents the cheese tupperware after a three-course meal. It generally contains over ten varieties, and once you’ve chosen your selection, the cheese gets wrapped up and put away. No going back for seconds! I could go on and on, but we are on our way to an apero, so must say “Au Revoir,” et “A la prochaine!”
